Xander Marketing writes Social Networking Policy for Top 10 Tips

This post was last edited by Alex Cohen, on the March 8, 2010 @ 10:43 am

Top 10 Tips, the new and rapidly growing online resource for people interested in the ‘how to’s’ from business has worked with Alex from Xander Marketing to develop its social media policy.

Xander Marketing was approached because of its experience in social media following a connection on Twitter.

The policy will act as a framework for Top 10 Tips board members to interact with current readers and attract new readers to the website. The policy covers the popular social networking sites as well as providing ‘etiquette’ for interacting on these sites.

To read the policy and visit the site click here.

‘We were really impressed by the standard of work and feel that Xander Marketing is clearly able to demonstrate best practice.

This policy is critical as we have been waiting to start using our social networking tools to greater effect. Thank You Alex.’

7 reasons why you should market your business

This post was last edited by Alex Cohen, on the March 8, 2010 @ 10:43 am

  1. You may have customers now but where is business coming from tomorrow?
  2. We’re still in a recession – your competitors aren’t marketing as much. Gain market share when you can and when we’re out of the recession you will thrive
  3. If you don’t market your business, your competitors will, and they’ll take market share from you
  4. By doing one thing a day to market your business, for example writing a blog post or sending a letter, will provide you with up to 365  new opportunities a year. These opportunities will help you win new business!
  5. You don’t need a large budget to get going, you can start small. Start a blog, make some calls, write an email campaign or sign up to Twitter
  6. How many people can you and your team talk to or meet in a day? How many people can you ‘hit’ from a marketing campaign in a day? Use marketing to spread your reach and build your brand
  7. You will get a lot more business if someone contacts you rather than you contacting them. Use marketing to get people to come to you and save you time in the sales process

Authenticity

This post was last edited by Alex Cohen, on the March 8, 2010 @ 10:45 am

authenticity

I had this With Compliments slip come through my front door a few months ago, I liked it, it got my attention. It was hand-written, personal and friendly. Wow, they were cleaning a ‘close neighbour’s’ gutters, were probably in the area, had a With Compliments slip handy and wrote me a nice message. Thanks Ben!

I didn’t need my gutters cleaned at that time but kept hold of it for the right time. A month later the same With Compliments slip came through my door. This time I inspected it closely, it wasn’t written in pen like I thought, it was a actually a print out.

The third one I had through my door prompted me to write this blog. The reason a genuine approach like this would work is because it’s personal and authentic. The moment you realise it’s not personal all that ‘trust’ goes away. They probably weren’t cleaning my ‘close neighbours gutters over the next few days’ (it’s a good thing I didn’t ask them!). On closer inspection of their website I found out they’re a national company so ‘Ben’ who posted this flyer through my door is probably not even a ‘Ben’.

The lesson to learn from this is you have to be authentic in your marketing otherwise people will see through it. If Ben was a local, one man band that cleaned gutters, had genuinely cleaned my neighbours gutters and posted this through my door and that’s the kind of person I was after to do my gutters then fantastic, it’s great marketing as it gets attention! If though it’s a nationwide company with local representatives, say that – show me who you are. Write me a flyer scaring me of the costs of not cleaning my gutters or tell me how the nationwide support makes your service better.

Just don’t try and fool me, because once you do that I will never use you!

What can you do with social media?

This post was last edited by Alex Cohen, on the March 8, 2010 @ 10:46 am

Social networking sites are more popular than email, 1 in 6 minutes of UK internet time is spent on social networking sites…how can you get involved?

The following lists the 5 most popular sites and ways to use social media for your business…

  • Twitter: A micro-blogging site, great for feeding ‘breadcrumbs’ to your followers on a daily basis.
  • LinkedIn: Great for connecting with business contacts. Consider setting up a group and facilitating discussions around your brand or creating a group that appeals to your target market.
  • Facebook: Great for B2C marketing. Facebook has more demographic data than it knows what to do with. Target by age, location, relationship status and hobbies.
  • Blog: You’re reading one now. Great for news articles, viewpoints or how to guides. Search engines also really like them.
  • Digg: Lets people share content – the more people that share it the higher your content gets ranked. Great for search engines and getting your content found.

How do you use them – as with any marketing you should start with a strategy, set goals and measure results by whether or not you achieve these goals.
